A shortage of Bicillin, a type of penicillin crucial to the fight against syphilis, especially to prevent the STI in infants, is alarming infectious disease experts. Such scarcity, they warn, could worsen the U.S. epidemic, I report for @NYTimes. 1/

Great to see a strong commitment to health in tonight’s budget — including $91m towards a new Centre for Disease Control and Prevention to meet the challenges of future pandemics, AND address Australia’s large and growing burden of chronic disease. Well done @Mark_Butler_MP.
@DrTedros 🚨 BREAKING 🚨
"Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice"-@DrTedros#COVID19
The @WHO has just declared an end to the #COVID19 public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
"I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency", says @DrTedros at press conference going on now.
My first peer reviewed article has been published. For those interested please kick back and enjoy some light weekend reading on: #COVID19, #Childcare and the effects of #Cohorting! #FETP

Last month, @WHOGOARN held an International Outbreak Response workshop with partners from @ourANU, Masters of Applied Epidemiology Programme, and @NatTraumaCentre, #Australia 🇦🇺.
This training helps build emergency health workforce capacity to respond to outbreaks globally.
A few Aussie MAEs on a journey to solve epi problems, understand how human behaviour drives epidemics, engage with our community, all while striving to reduce health inequalities and influence policymakers to make evidence-based decisions. Happy #worldfieldepidemiologyday!
The @WHO EC voted 8-6 against declaring a #monkeypox PHEIC. Legally, @DrTedros is not bound by their recommendation. For the first time ever, he declared an emergency against EC advice. That’s politically courageous & I applaud his historic decision
The first project from my #MAE has been published! In a outbreak of the #delta variant of #covid19 in a high school, spread occurred in active classes such as drama and physical education. You can read about it here: https://t.co/AIuSQMENsd

@Sharkviro @Virologica Oh sorry to hear this. He was a guest lecturer for a uni course and his myxomatosis work inspired me to get into epidemiology 🙏🏽
AHPPC statement on #COVID19 winter update and ongoing health protection measures to support our community.
Of note, change in definition of re-infection - down to 28 days.

There is a growing third Omicron wave. The Technical Group on Immunisation has now recommended Australians over 50 receive a 4th COVID dose. If you are aged 30-49 you are also able to receive a 4th dose if you choose.
Unfortunately ending isolation based on time alone means that many people leave isolation still infectious - really need a negative RAT (not PCR, that could be positive for months) to prove no longer infectious
