Classroom #redesign projects are coming along!
We started our project by surveying elementary Ss on what they want in classroom: 80% chose “a colorful and welcoming environment” as top choice. And that’s what they got from the G7 Makerspace #designthinking class. @CMSSharks
Great tradition at @CMSSharks is to collect food to give to maintenance workers for the holidays. Students decorated the box with letters thanking our staff for everything they do for us (in Spanish) #appreciation
Tackling plastic bottle waste in #Makerspace class by designing and prototyping beverage containers that are eco-friendly. I love prototyping days. Students take ownership and I just get out of the way #designthinking@CMSSharks
What a great way to end the week with appreciation circles, students writing messages of thanks and gratitude. Feeling #grateful myself for @TedOCschool and Mr. Combes @CMSSharks
Building empathy through a @humansofny photo project. MS Photography students photograph people they see everyday but don’t know well— janitors, gardeners, nannys, maids— and learned more about their stories. @CMSSharks@humansofny
Today the MS #DesignThinking class acted as “field researchers” and interviewed Grade 5 students about their classroom. They’ll use the data to inform a project on “Redesigning the Elemenrtary Classroom.” @CMSSharks
After redirecting a student to put away his computer, I asked what he was doing— making his first song on Garage Band. He stayed after class (and again at lunch) to show it to me. Nice reminder that kids are naturally curious and always learning on their own.
One group in G6 #designthinking redesigned the traditional grade system to decrease student stress. Their classmates gave them feedback (how can we still have rigor without stress) and the Ss are rethinking their design. Prototype > Test > Prototype on repeat! @CMSSharks
Students in the CMS Middle School can choose from a variety of electives, including Makerspace. Grade 7 students are learning about design, engineering, and teamwork in this Spaghetti Bridge Challenge, where students build bridges using only spaghetti, glue and rubber bands. 🍝🌉
#Teamwork makes the dream work (side note: my kids are petitioning to have a spaghetti party after we test our spaghetti bridges and tbh I’m down). #designthinking@CMSSharks
Civil Engineering meets Design in the #CMS Makerspace class. Students used structural design principles to blueprint a bridge they will be building out of spaghetti. Can’t wait to see what they look like in 3-D (and how much weight a pack of spaghetti can hold)!@CMSSharks
We used the #DesignThinking process to improve everyday objects. Presenting: a self-cleaning white board, an electric toothbrush with pre-filled toothpaste, an automatic pencil with spare lead and (the wild idea) a home security system modeled after a Golden Snitch @CMSSharks
Our first design challenge today: Build a Marble Roller Coaster. An awesome reminder of how much MS students are capable of when there fully engaged in creating, designing and prototyping.
