Although Tom Barrack is formally the US ambassador to Turkey, he often sounds more like Turkey’s representative in Washington.

But the problem goes beyond his political posture: he appears to lack even basic knowledge of the region he represents.

This is a profoundly reductive view of one of the most consequential regions in human history—the land of the Agricultural Revolution, the domestication of plants and animals, the emergence of cities and states, the invention of writing, the wheel, and some of humanity’s earliest maps.

To reduce this region to a perpetual “problem” that even God and the prophets could not solve is not merely ignorant; it reveals a deeply distorted understanding of its history.

Tom Barrack may be one of the most ignorant and compromised political figures the United States has ever produced.

Her family should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country.
