This is another interview I will never forget documenting the history of the Vietnam War.

Major James Capers Jr. is a legendary figure in U.S. Marine Corps history, renowned for his extraordinary bravery and leadership during the Vietnam War. As a member of the Force Reconnaissance unit, he faced unimaginable challenges, including a harrowing ambush where he sustained severe injuries—his stomach torn open, a broken leg, multiple gunshot wounds, and 17 pieces of shrapnel embedded in his body. Despite these devastating wounds, Capers refused to abandon his team, ensuring all seven of his fellow Marines made it back home alive. His covert missions were so secretive that his heroic career remained largely unknown for years, only later gaining recognition through documentaries and profiles celebrating his valor.

Beyond that single mission, Capers’ legacy is marked by his pioneering work in reconnaissance training tactics, shaping the way Marines approach such operations. A highly decorated veteran, he has been honored as a hometown hero and is considered one of the most distinguished members of Force Recon history. Veterans and admirers have since rallied to petition former President Trump to award him the Medal of Honor, believing his selflessness and courage exemplify the highest standards of military service. Now retired, Major Capers’ story continues to inspire, reflecting resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to his brothers-in-arms.
