The #AfCFTA Secretariat is convening a Validation Workshop on the Republic of Kenya’s Gap Analysis of the #AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade from 12–14 May 2026 in Tigoni, Kenya.
The Workshop brings together key stakeholders, including ministries responsible for trade, ICT and the digital economy, the Data Protection Commission, Investment Promotion Authority, Revenue Authority, Central Bank, Competition Authority, fintech and banking associations, as well as private sector representatives, to review and validate the findings of Kenya’s Digital Trade Regulatory Assessment under the #AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade.
The Workshop aims to align the findings of the Gap Analysis with the objectives of the AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade, while supporting the domestication of the Protocol within Kenya’s legal and regulatory framework.
This forms part of the #AfCFTA Secretariat’s broader programme to support State Parties in aligning their laws and regulations with the Protocol on Digital Trade, and to ensure that no measures inconsistent with the Protocol are adopted, in line with Article 48 of the Protocol.
Other State Parties are encouraged to submit formal requests for similar technical support to facilitate the domestication and implementation of the Protocol within their respective jurisdictions.

At the Commonwealth Trade & Investment Summit, H.E. highlighted Africa’s resilience amid global uncertainty—and the untapped potential for deeper intra-Commonwealth trade and investment.
Despite differences across economies, we’ve secured comprehensive agreements that begin to address longstanding structural gaps. Instruments like the AfCFTA Adjustment Fund ensure more inclusive gains by supporting capacity, industrialisation, and productivity.
With negotiations concluded, the focus must now shift to strengthening domestic markets, and building resilient value and supply chains.
In an unprecedented global context, we must:
* Deepen sustainable, rules-based partnerships
* Look inward and accelerate trade and investment ties
* Advance a clear plan to double intra-Commonwealth trade and investment
* Unlock capital flows for industrial growth

At the Friends of the AfCFTA Breakfast Meeting on the margins of #WEF, attention turned from vision to delivery as the AfCFTA enters its full implementation phase.
H.E. Wamkele Mene outlined the next steps for Africa’s digital future, noting that with 50 of 55 State Parties having ratified the Agreement and all AfCFTA Protocols concluded, the AfCFTA’s legal architecture is now complete.
The adoption of the Protocol on Digital Trade marks a decisive shift from rule-making to implementation. Its success will depend on enabling cross-border data flows, interoperable digital payments, and trusted data-protection frameworks, alongside continued progress on payments as a critical enabler of trade at scale.
Africa’s digital economy could reach USD 720 billion by 2050, offering significant opportunities for young people. However, this potential must be matched with jobs, skills development, and access, or the youth dividend risks becoming a liability.
In this context, H.E. Mene highlighted the launch of the ADAPT project in 2025, a joint initiative between the AfCFTA, the World Economic Forum, the Tony Blair Institute, and IOTA, aimed at supporting delivery and accelerating Africa’s digital trade readiness. He underscored the importance of sustained private sector engagement, from agritech to healthtech, alongside collaboration with partners, including Google, to support young people.
