Somalia politics update:

Somalia opposition groups on Saturday said they have endorsed direct election model as compromise to move word.

Holding direct elections and moving away from a system dominated by clan elders and regional leaders was a key demand of the federal government.

The federal government has so far direct elections in two regions - Mogadishu and Southwest State, an exercise that the opposition argues was not inclusive.

The federal government, for its part, says direct local council and regional parliamentary elections will be followed by national level elections in which federal lawmakers will be elected by the people before they proceed to elect a president.

The official signing ceremony will be on Friday, 19 June in Switzerland.

A Somali referee who is due to officiate at the World Cup has been denied entry to the U.S. after “vetting concerns” emerged upon his arrival in Florida over the weekend.

Omar Artan arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Istanbul on Saturday but was barred from entering the country following a “routine” inspection, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed in a statement to The Athletic.

Artan, the 2025 Confederation of African Football men’s referee of the year, is one of 52 referees handpicked by world governing body FIFA for the tournament.
