I spent a few hours writing out a common family interaction pain point with a dear family member to an AI bot, and asked it for analysis using the work of a therapist I respect.
Brother, tell me why when I hugged my wife last night I cried the ugliest cry of the last 5 years?
I really think today is the best day to have a child. We’re on the precipice of radical change in society - I suspect with the new tools proliferating, we’ll have more work than people in the coming decades.
Do it anon; make your list of your spousal non-negotiables, find the best fit, fall in love, get married, lay down your life for the ones you love and love you, have children. For 95% of us, there is no greater meaning in life than this.
Nation states atomize families with the promise of independence and self reliance for the individual worker, and it’s a great thing to have that opportunity, “The people will curse the hoarder of grain, but blessing will crown the one who sells it” as the proverb goes.
The trade off is that the default childcare assumption is that some other self reliant individual will care for your child in a superior way, despite any filial affiliation. This is, of course, preposterous (pic related, from CDC regarding child abuse risks). Even without abuse, you’d have to be hiring saints to get a superior childcare solution from no family members watching a large group of children - remember this is not a well paid job.
As a parent, you’re at least are confronted with the premise that you could lay down your life for your child’s future wellbeing whereas a childcare worker is not paid to love your child, but to merely to be legally responsible for meeting their needs during an allotted time.
My message: be the “founder” in your family that changes how your family approaches your children’s lives. You can’t make grandma become a good resource for babysitting, but you can become that person when the time comes.
Today is my kid's last day of daycare/pre-K. When she started at daycare in 2022 she got horribly sick within 3 days and was out for the next four weeks. You have to pay even if your kid doesn't go attend. I started keeping track of her days in and out after this. (1/9)
Film idea:
Toddler + Dog bonding story
Toddler is terribly frightened after a long car ride, at this little dog jack russel terrier barking.
The toddler soon after gets bit by the dog.
Teeth impressions in skin, no blood.
Dog is now kenneled whenever the toddler is outside playing.
The toddler sees the dog and throws sand, reprimanded. Then try’s a bone and gets a “eh”, and finally, later, decides to feed the dog with some mostly eat pizza slice.
Movie ends with the dog and toddler riding in the car back on the car ride.
@realTanyaTay Direct primary care. Ditch the insurance and network, get catastrophic coverage, cheaper prices, better service, actually meet with an MD
Been seeing lots of ridiculous legal stories on the TL. I’ll share one of mine and then some thoughts:
I’m attending community college, probably 19 years old, maybe younger. I get pulled over by campus police for talking on the phone.
I was not actually talking on the phone. I get the ticket and dispute it at the court date on principle.
Day of court I present the evidence I presented to the officer at the scene, as well as the call logs from my cell service provider.
Judge rules in favor of the officer. So I pay the fine, maybe $100.
For years I was pissed at this unfairness.
I wasn’t so connected that I could meaningfully drive change here, and I wasn’t about to draw fire for actively breaking the law, but it did reinforce the diverging nature of my personal objectives and those of the state representatives.
Over the next 5 years I actively engaged in malicious compliance, and police interaction audit procedures - refusing to answer questions at stops, etc. If I could waste public resources or attention anonymously, I did.
It’s really not a good model for society - today I would say that I was part of the enshitification problem. I modeled the justice system as a tool to be used by the state or other actors against my person, or preferably, as a tool to be used against my enemies.
It’s my opinion that we should be deeply concerned regarding the perceived legitimacy of the legal system.
Whenever self-help becomes preferred over traditional legal remedies you have the basis of a failing state.
That is my opinion. Moreover, I consider that Carthage is to be destroyed.
@huntercdurham Haha, love it man!
I’m going to have plan a trip out to Florida, already got a great friend there, would love to grab a wave or run with you
@HockJohannes@CTW_SMB I think the seasoning typically raises questions like, how did this money get here, are there any obligations tied to this money, etc.
Been thinking about the Flock debate discourse.
I think the most “American” way forward is to let municipalities decide placement/contracts, but require that the data collected be available to all residents of that area.
Needs workshopping, and negates some defense proffered by the devices, but it’s the most reasonable way forward for public security, imo.
Story time:
I had just broken up with a horse girl. She was great, but we were headed different directions.
I’m at a brewery work event (San Diego, baby) and mention to my boss that horse girls are crazy, trying to be a cool guy.
My boss immediately informs me his husband is a horse trainer for the hoity-toity Poway horse girls. 💀💀💀
Great guy, gave a very generous wedding present, and I finally kicked the habit of saying things I didn’t mean just to fill idle space.
There’s a meme about “horse girls” being a type you should avoid. Having grown up on a horse farm with a horse professional for a mother (and now sister), my analysis is that “horse girls” grow up to be confident, high-agency women and that makes a certain type of man very uncomfortable.
