Let us address the misconceptions regarding Northern Kenya Members of Parliament living in Nairobi and the issues surrounding the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in a factual and objective manner:
1. The Parliament of Kenya is based in Nairobi. The National Assembly convenes in Nairobi, and all Members of Parliament, regardless of whether they represent constituencies in Kisumu, Mombasa, Nyeri, Turkana, or North Eastern regions, spend the majority of their working hours in Nairobi due to parliamentary sessions, committee meetings, and official duties. It is unreasonable to single out Members from Northern Kenya for "living in Nairobi" when this is part of their official responsibilities. However, they do regularly visit their constituencies.
2. Every Member of Parliament maintains a residence in Nairobi. Politicians from Western Kenya, Coast, Rift Valley, and other regions either own or rent homes in the city for practical reasons. This is a common practice among elected officials nationwide. Governors and senators also have similar arrangements. Targeting one region while ignoring others constitutes selective criticism.
3. The Constituency Development Fund has significantly contributed to development in Northern Kenya. Since its inception, constituencies in Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Turkana, Isiolo, Marsabit, and other parts of Northern Kenya have established schools, bursary programs, and healthcare facilities that have educated thousands. Managed by Members of Parliament, the fund has enabled the region to produce its own doctors, nurses, teachers, engineers, and other professionals, many of whom are the first in their families to attend university. This represents genuine development, rather than corruption.
Furthermore, bursaries for secondary education and university students in Northern Kenya's pastoralist communities have facilitated access to education.
If investments are being audited, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive review, as prime real estate in South C, Kilimani, Ngong Road, and Eastleigh also belongs to various communities. Accountability should be applied uniformly across all regions, rather than selectively targeting specific tribes under the guise of addressing corruption.
North Eastern Kenya is an integral part of the nation. All regions should be subject to the same standards and receive equal respect.
