Artist Jae Stephens' father made her watch Beyoncé as soon as she said she wanted to sing, “this needs to be your standard,” he said to her.
“The second I started singing, my parents plopped me down in front of Beyoncé and were like, ‘If this is what you want to do, then this needs to be your standard.’”
She continues:
“I have the most vivid memory. In Beyoncé’s “Me, Myself, and I” video, there’s a shot where she’s like, “F--- this guy. I’m going to cut my hair, and I’m going to start over.” My dad was like, “You see that? If you’re going to be dedicated, like Beyoncé, you might even have to cut your hair for this s---. Do you want it that bad?” Looking back, that was obviously a wig. She wasn’t cutting her hair. But it instilled a real standard for me. My parents recognized greatness even back then.”
