Today is International Cat Day - and how better to celebrate it than sharing a wonderful feline Autochrome? I have cleaned-up this lovely 114-year-old Autochrome plate by Marcel Meys, entitled "Portrait of a cat sleeping on a cushion". It was captured in colour in 1912 using an early colour glass-plate process. It isn't colourised.
@grok I read somewhere that the attack on the Iranian school was not a double tap, but a triple tap: first the attack on the school, killing the children; second, the attack on first responders; third, an attack on families who arrived in a wave soon after. Was it a triple tap?
Every week, there are more stories of deliberate harm being inflicted upon detainees by ICE and the private, for-profit prisons they use. In this case, they withheld medication, and the individual suffered a stroke.
ICE locked away Gabriel Johnson, a father and husband who had been living in the United States legally since he was 15 years old.
While detained, ICE denied him his medication. Gabriel has since had a stroke. Half of his body is now paralyzed. ICE refuses to let him speak to his family out of fear he might tell them the Texas hospital room he is languishing in.
His daughter is demanding he come home, saying, “This is not love, this is not care, this is not America.”
I am asking ICE to release Gabriel immediately to reunite with his family and get the medical care he needs.
I have cleaned-up this fascinating Autochrome portrait of the author Mark Twain (1835-1910). He is shown in bed with his book and pipe at the age of 73, and the shot was taken in colour 118 years ago at his home in Redding, Connecticut, by American photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn.
Twain (real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens) is famous for such literary works as 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), 'The Prince and the Pauper' (1881), 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn' (1884), and 'A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court' (1889).
The photo was taken in 1908 using an early colour glass-plate process and isn't colourised.
Every day, our attention is stolen by the evil people of the world. Politicians who don’t care. Billionaires who don’t share. In a roiling mass of bad news, we sometimes miss the good. Human kindness still exists. Cooperation still works. Love still conquers.
The US Native languages were those of Algonquian, Iroquoian, Siouan, and Muskogean families.
The first European language spoken in what is now the United States was Spanish, introduced by explorers like Ponce de León in 1513.
Anyways. Happy Bad Bumny weekend!!!
Emperor Penguins have no natural land predators, so they have zero fear of humans.
To him, this photographer isn't a threat... he's just a warm, red rock. 🧠🐧
