Yotam Budnik is a 12th-grade student from Rehovot 🇮🇱 just won a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Informatics in Uzbekistan but was not allowed to compete under the Israeli flag.

When Yotam was awarded his medal 🏅 stepped onto the podium, pulled an Israeli flag out of his pocket and wore it in defiance of the Anti-Semitic discrimination.

While the medal 🏅 was revoked from him for his courage, he has no regrets

"The law that prevents me from waving the flag is based only on politics, and I thought there was no place for that in a scientific competition", he said.

The organizers demanded that he return his medal.

Yotam said no.

Organizers took away his certificate and removed his ranking from the website.

Please help make sure the world knows the name Yotam Budnik and that he is not only a world class computer science genius, but also a man of courage and pride of the Jewish people 💙

Elle relate précisément l’inertie de l’individu face à l’effondrement.

Regardez la composition. Un chef-d’œuvre involontaire.

Au premier plan, le sable doré, les tongs abandonnées, la glacière. Le décor ordinaire du bonheur estival. Deux personnages assis, de dos, comme dans un tableau de Caspar David Friedrich. Sauf que Friedrich peignait des hommes contemplant le sublime. Ici, ils contemplent la catastrophe. Et ils ne bougent pas.

Au centre, le parasol. Publicitaire, criard, dérisoire. Un pastis face à l’apocalypse. C’est presque trop parfait : la France qui prend l’apéro pendant que le monde brûle. Aucun scénariste n’aurait osé.

Et puis le ciel. Les deux tiers de l’image. Cette muraille de fumée qui avale la lumière, ce dégradé d’ocre et de noir digne d’un Turner. La nature qui reprend la palette des maîtres pour peindre notre propre fin.

La femme photographie l’incendie avec son téléphone. Mise en abyme totale : nous documentons notre disparition au lieu de l’empêcher.

Cette image dit tout. Le déni, le confort, l’habitude. Nous sommes tous sur cette plage. Nous voyons tous le nuage. Et nous restons assis, parce que l’eau est bonne et qu’on a posé nos congés.

Les historiens de l’art parleront un jour de cette photo comme on parle du Radeau de la Méduse.

Sauf que cette fois, le naufrage, c’est nous qui le regardons depuis la plage.

Fifty years ago today, Air France Captain Michel Bacos showed the world what true moral courage looks like.

When Flight 139 was hijacked by Palestinian and German terrorists and flown to Entebbe, the non-Jewish passengers were eventually released. Bacos and his crew were also offered their freedom.

However, Bacos, who also served in the French army under DeGaulle, refused to leave his Jewish passengers. All his crew also refused, without exception.

Instead, they chose to remain alongside the 94 Jewish hostages, fully aware of the danger they faced. As Bacos later said, abandoning his passengers was simply "unimaginable."

Days later, they were freed in the legendary Israeli rescue mission, Operation Entebbe, led by Yoni Netanyahu, who would die in the battle.

For his extraordinary courage, Bacos was honoured by both France and Israel. Yet his greatest legacy was not the medals he received, but the example he set: that decency, duty and humanity must never yield to terror or antisemitism.

Michel Bacos was a true hero. May his life, his courage and his memory forever be a blessing and an inspiration.

Als ich die Aufnahmen von israelischen Soldaten sah, die auf dem Gelände des Nova-Festivals nach Überlebenden suchten und hinter Tresen sowie Kühlgeräten Berge von Leichen fanden, tote Frauen mit zerschnittener Kleidung, verbrannte Senioren und Kinder in ihren Häusern in den Kibbuzim, saß ich fassungslos vor diesen Bildern. Keine Sekunde lang habe ich daran gezweifelt, dass die Täter und diejenigen, die diese Taten unterstützt oder ermöglicht haben, zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden müssen. Keine Sekunde habe ich daran gezweifelt, dass dieser Hass auf Juden und ihre Freunde auch hier zum Problem werden würde. Die Gewissheit kam einen Tag danach, als in Berlin schon Süßigkeiten verteilt wurden und junge Muslime sich bestätigt fühlten, ganz offen mit roten Dreiecken durch die Gegend zu laufen und Pro-Palästinensische Demos anzumelden.

Es vergeht kein Tag, an dem ich mir nicht wünsche, dass jeder einzelne Hamas-Kämpfer und die Verantwortlichen für diese Verbrechen vor Gericht gestellt und bestraft werden. Und ich wünsche dem israelischen Volk, dass es dieses Trauma des 7. Oktober und das Leid um die Geiseln eines Tages verarbeiten kann.

Vielleicht wird es irgendwann zumindest einen kleinen Moment der Genugtuung geben — nicht als Ausgleich für das Unfassbare, aber als Zeichen dafür, dass Gerechtigkeit ihren Platz gefunden hat.

Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him.

I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.
