Cancer: A Growing Global Health Emergency

Background

Cancer is no longer a distant medical term. it is now one of the leading causes of death worldwide, touching nearly every family in some way.

"11-1">Nearly 21 million people were diagnosed with cancer and 9.8 million died from the disease globally in 2024. About 1 in 5 people worldwide will develop cancer during their lifetime.Also, 1 in 9 men and 1 in 13 women will die from it.

What makes this especially alarming is the pace of growth.

"15-1">Cancer incidence has risen 2.3-fold since 1990, and by 2050, cases are projected to exceed 26 million, with total people living with cancer surpassing 100 million.

"11-1">The ACS's own projection puts new cases at 34 million by 2050 — a 67% increase from 2024 driven simply by population aging and growth.

The Numbers Behind the Alarm

"9-1">In men, lung cancer leads with 1.6 million cases, followed by prostate cancer at 1.5 million. Among women, breast cancer tops the list with 2.4 million new cases, followed by lung cancer at 1 million . "9-1">Asia accounts for 53% of the global cancer burden due to its large population, compared to 21% in Europe and smaller shares elsewhere.

"15-1">High-income countries have higher incidence rates, but low-income countries carry the highest mortality burden meaning poorer nations are diagnosing fewer cases but losing more people, largely due to late detection and limited treatment access.

Major Causes

Cancer doesn't have one single cause. It develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, usually triggered by a combination of factors:

1. Lifestyle factors. Tobacco use, excessive alcohol, poor diet, and physical inactivity

2. Obesity. Increasingly linked to rising cancer rates, "10-1">with obesity-related cancers rising among both younger and older adults worldwide.

3. Environmental exposure. Pollution, radiation, and certain chemicals.

4. Infections. some viruses (like HPV and Hepatitis B) are known to trigger specific cancers.

5. Genetics/family history. Some cancers run in families.

6. Aging population .As life expectancy rises globally, more people live long enough to develop cancer.

7. Alcohol use. "10-1">strengthening evidence now links alcohol consumption directly to increased cancer risk.

Why Cases Are Rising So Fast

Much of the increase is simply due to more people living longer combined with population growth but modifiable risk factors (diet, alcohol, tobacco, inactivity) are accelerating it further, especially in younger populations who are now being diagnosed earlier than previous generations.

Prevention

The encouraging part: cancer isn't entirely out of our hands. "11-1">Nearly half of all cancer deaths are estimated to be avoidable through modifiable risk factors, with an additional substantial share preventable through early detection and timely treatment.

Practical prevention steps:
- Avoid tobacco in all forms
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active
- Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. limit processed meats
- Get vaccinated where available (HPV, Hepatitis B)
- Reduce exposure to environmental toxins and radiation
- Go for regular screenings.Many cancers are far more treatable when caught early

How It Can Be Eradicated: Awareness & Treatment

No single action eliminates cancer, but a combined approach significantly reduces its toll:

1. Public awareness campaigns. Teaching people to recognize warning signs and understand their own risk factors

2. Early screening programs. Mammograms, cervical screening, colorectal screening, and general checkups catch cancer while it's still treatable.

3. Equitable access to treatment Closing the gap between high-income and low-income countries, since mortality is disproportionately higher where treatment access is weakest.

4. Vaccination programs. Particularly HPV vaccination, which prevents cervical cancer, one of the most preventable cancers globally

5. Research investment . Continued funding into early detection technology and treatment innovation.

6. Community-level education. Especially in underserved regions, using trusted local voices to spread accurate information and counter misinformation, since "10-1">most cancer patients are now exposed to misinformation, which delays proper treatment-seeking.

Cancer's rise is real and measurable, but so is our ability to fight it. The data shows that prevention, early detection, and equal access to treatment could save millions of lives that would otherwise be lost. The fight against cancer isn't just a medical one .it is a matter of awareness, policy, and community action working together.

Dr. Gidado Hails Security Reforms, Urges Wider Welfare Support, Warns Against Ethnic and Religious Profiling of Criminality

Security Expert, Dr. Captain (Rtd) Luqman Gidado, has commended the Federal Government for what he described as bold and strategic reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, particularly the recent increase in the salaries of military personnel.

Speaking in a recent interview on Emirates FM, Ilorin, Dr. Gidado noted that improved welfare is critical to sustaining the morale, commitment and operational effectiveness of security personnel. He urged the Government to extend similar welfare measures to other security agencies while ensuring that broader institutional, operational and technological reforms remain a priority.

He further cautioned against the ethnic and religious profiling of criminality, stressing that insecurity should be treated as a national challenge rather than one associated with any particular ethnic or religious group. According to him, the fight against insecurity requires professionalism, intelligence-driven approaches and collective responsibility.

Captain Gidado therefore called on all Nigerians to contribute their quota to the protection of lives and property, emphasizing that building a safer Nigeria is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation between citizens, communities and security agencies.

After visiting approximately seven to eight polling units, the observer reported that the overall situation remained very calm and orderly throughout the monitored areas.

*​Voter Turnout*
The observer highlighted a massive turnout of voters who came out to exercise their civic duty across the observed locations.
​Security Presence and Expectations
Security arrangements were described as adequate, estimated at around 98% coverage by the police and other security agencies on the ground. Recognizing the police as the lead agency constitutionally empowered for election monitoring, the observer expressed hope that the peaceful atmosphere would persist through the upcoming vote collation and counting stages.
