And my reference was to the Medicare safety net, which is available simply if you have claims above a certain $ value - no other condition.

@just_brash Any benefit that’s not means tested. So, child care subsidies, Medicare safety net, and electricity rebate to name a few. No idea why we pay these to people who don’t need the support when we’ve got people who need support who don’t get what they need.

@JaneCaro Disingenuous of you. She didn’t say ‘anything’. And things like the pension aren’t universal - they’re sensibly means tested and only available to those who need it. But there’s plenty of other benefits flowing to the wealthy, who don’t need them. Why should they stay in place?

@lesstenny Won’t win votes but sometimes pollies have to do what’s right. We shouldn’t talk of things as free - we get them from fellow taxpayers or by leaving debt for our kids.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give support to those who need it. But we shouldn’t give it to those who don’t.

@BarbaraPocock Negative gearing is an advantage - being able to deduct interest payments against your tax bill is a leg up to investors. But you do realise the capital gains discount for owner occupiers is 100% (ie there is zero CGT on your own home)?
