RUSSIA AND UKRAINE
•Presidents Putin and Trump held a phone call on Tuesday to follow up on the meetings Putin had with Trump’s emissaries, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, over the weekend.
•The Kremlin said the hourlong call was constructive and emphasized that Putin had allayed concerns about Russia’s increasing hostility to Europe: “In view of the speculation about Russia's alleged hostile intentions toward European countries, it was underlined that we don't have any aggressive plans regarding Europe.”
•Just hours later, a Russian jet-powered drone appears to have carried out an aggressive, hostile plan in Europe by targeting Ukraine’s Pres. Zelensky’s plane as it was about to take off from Moldova for Norway’s royal funeral.
•Norway’s Prime Minister, Gahr Støre, said Zelensky’s plane “was almost hit,” but Ukrainian authorities downplayed the incident, calling the claim that Zelensky’s life was at risk “exaggerated.”

YEMEN
•Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen in retaliation for Houthi strikes that injured 73 civilians and caused fires at oil terminals in southern Saudi on Tuesday.
•The reopened skirmish could get worse. Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, said that his country and Türkiye may be obligated to join the fight if the Houthis continue to target Saudi because of the mutual defense treaty that Pakistan, Türkiye, and Saudi signed last month.

IRAN
•Iran seems to be trying to break its stalemate with the U.S. in the Strait of Hormuz by escalating the conflict.
•Its forces have targeted U.S. warships – including an aircraft carrier – at least three times in the past week. It also fired electro-optical missiles at U.S. Navy vessels for the first time, and damaged at least nine U.S. warplanes in a ballistic missile attack on a U.S. airbase in Jordan.
•None of Iran’s attempted strikes on U.S. warships hit their target, but the fact that some came close led U.S. officials to speculate that Russia or China may be augmenting Iran’s degraded targeting capabilities by providing intelligence and satellite imagery.
•The Institute for the Study of War assessed that Iran’s recent escalation probably aims “to degrade the United States’ willingness and ability to continue enforcing the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports.”
•Indeed, Iran appears to be specifically targeting vessels that are enforcing the U.S. blockade. Some see its fresh aggression as a sign that the U.S. blockade is succeeding in depriving the regime of its primary source of money from oil sales.

HEAT
•The EU’s climate service determined that August had tied the previous record – registered in July 2023 - as the hottest month ever, with a global average temperature of 16.95°C (62.51°F), or 1.65°C (2.97°F) above pre-industrial levels.
•Climate scientists say this year’s particularly powerful El Niño is exacerbating the long-term upward trend in temperatures from global warming. They anticipate more heat records over the next year as a result.
