The Problem With “EVENTUALLY”:

I was listening to a BBC discussion about BTS, the Grammys and the new Asian pop category. In this episode, host Mariko Oi speaks to BBC music correspondent Mark Savage and Asian pop commentator Andy Trieu about BTS’s relationship with the Grammys, and one argument really stayed with me. The conversation was fairly neutral: a separate category could be seen as representation and could give smaller Asian artists visibility, helping them “eventually make their way into the main categories.”

But that word eventually is exactly where my question begins.

Why do Asian artists have to “eventually” make their way into the main categories?

A new Western artist does not need to prove themselves in a separate “Western Pop” category before being considered for Album of the Year or other General Field awards. They enter those conversations directly. So why should Asian artists be placed on a separate pathway and told they may eventually reach the centre?

That creates an uncomfortable hierarchy: some artists are already considered part of the universal conversation, while others are given a separate lane through which they must first prove themselves.

And history makes “eventually” a difficult promise to trust.

Hip-hop has had dedicated Grammy categories for decades, yet dedicated recognition did not automatically translate into equal recognition in the General Field. Latin music has also had dedicated categories and an entire separate awards institution, yet it took decades for a Spanish-language album to finally win Album of the Year.

So when people say Asian artists can eventually make their way into the main categories, I have to ask: eventually when? Ten years from now? Thirty? Sixty?
