Winning an election is subversion of the state.
Ok then.
A reminder that we signed a treaty promising to protect #HongKong from stuff like this. Where are those promises now?
Participants of the 2020 Hong Kong pro-democracy primaries have been arrested by national security police early this morning, according to reports. They each have been alleged with a count of subversion, an offense under Beijing’s sweeping National Security Law.
We strongly condemn the arrests of pro-democracy activists who stood in last year's democratic primaries. Beijing is once again undermining Hong Kong's democracy & breaching its obligations under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
BREAKING:
HK activists & politicians are arrested under "subversion" due to their participation in pro-democracy camp's primary election.
When one of the most critical Senate races is ongoing in the US, in HK, participation in elections could lead to life-long imprisonment.
#BREAKING Police also raided Joshua’s home for allegedly violating the national security law this morning as he took part in the primary election last year. 50+ democratic activists were arrested.
On Wednesday, more than 50 Hong Kong democrats were arrested under the national security law over their organisation and participation in the primaries for the postponed 2020 Legislative Council election last year. Full story: https://t.co/NJqdXDDJNq #HongKong
Apple Daily is reporting that Prof Robert Chung, former Director of the HKU Public Opinion Programme, is also arrested for, essentially, *doing a public opinion poll* https://t.co/x4oaOf0665
Hong Kong police arrested dozens of pro-democracy politicians in raids that swept up many prominent opposition figures, according to social media posts https://t.co/sPsOTGUdlO
Several Hong Kong ex-lawmakers were among dozens taken into custody by authorities on suspicion of violating the city’s national security law https://t.co/mkdtIpKxD6
The 50 people arrested this morning are the most vocal pro-democracy voices left in Hong Kong.
However, as they are arrested under the NSL, whether bail will be granted to them remains unknown.
Looking forward to response from Team @JoeBiden & the EU.
Eddie Chu was again arrested this morning at 6:25 am pertaining to the 35+ primary election. Eddie Chu is accused of breaching the draconian National Security Law. It is not yet known which Police station has been sent to.
The scale of this crackdown is unprecedented.
The free world must now act in an unprecedentedly robust manner.
Tough, targeted, coordinated sanctions.
A generous worldwide lifeboat scheme.
A UN Special Rapporteur
Cancellation of the ridiculous EU-CCP investment deal.
NOW.
Takes a particular sort of scum to brutalise a pregnant woman.
Since July last 2019, the @hkpoliceforce have shown again and again that pregnancy is no defence against their disproportionate brutalising of democracy campaigners.
Really hope she is ok.
