[MORAL COURAGE AND CANCEL CULTURE]
A video surfaced recently showing a group of young celebrities in their early 20s (A couple member of BINI and their friends), privately filmed among friends, making light but failing to show gravity, about a case involving sexual harassment of a minor.
It’s uncomfortable. It’s disappointing.
And yes, it’s wrong.
But let’s sit with the complexity for a moment.
These young people were in what they believed to be a “safe space”
Not a public forum
Not a press conference
But a room where they let their guard down.
That doesn’t excuse their words. What’s said in private often reveals more than what’s said in public. Still, privacy doesn’t equal moral exemption, and being young doesn’t mean being free from accountability.
Yet the instinct to cancel them....
To completely erase their credibility, future opportunities, and voices, feels more like vengeance than justice.
And we must ask ourselves: Is this truly what we want?
Because what they did was wrong, yes.
But it wasn’t irredeemable.
They showed ignorance
Not evil.
They lacked perspective
Not necessarily empathy.
If we put them under a lens so perfect, so infallible, that any misstep warrants total destructuon, we’re not encouraging better values...
We’re enforcing performance.
We’re sentencing people without room for process, without trial, without growth.
ALTERNATIVELY,
What if, instead, we made the line clear
“This is not okay. This thinking is harmful.”
And then, instead of slamming the door shut,
We cracked it open to ask:
“Will you learn? Will you grow? Will you try again, better?”
If we don’t make that shift, we risk something even more insidious.
We will create a generation of artists and public figures who are not thoughtful but fearful.
So fearful of saying the wrong thing, even in private, that they become robotic, overpolished, hyper-controlled, emotionally inaccessible.
They won’t feel safe to be real, or raw, or flawed.
They’ll be raised to believe that mistakes aren’t lessons but death sentences.
And when that happens, we don’t just lose the potential for human redemption....
We lose art itself.
We lose vulnerability.
We lose truth.
Let’s demand accountability.
Let’s name the harm.
But let’s also leave space for change.
Because moral courage is not just in calling people out but in calling them forward.
P.S.
This is a perspective from someone that is not a big fan of BINI, but starting to like them after their short stint in PBB.
Back in college, I made a mistake that ruined my reputation—na-cancel ako. I was crying every day, halos di ko masabi sa family ko. Only my best friend helped me get through the daily shame. When I finally told my family, they were disappointed, galit pa nga. But what surprised me was how they defended me in front of my school heads, who didn’t even want to hear my apology. My family stood up and said, “Mistakes are part of growing up. This won’t define who she is.”
Anong point ko here?
after leaving an abusive relationship, I hit rock bottom. I felt worthless, and honestly, gusto ko nang sumuko. Then one of my friend has this PFP of a girl—with Bayonetta, at first akala ko gf nya pero she said " Si Maloi yan sa BINI" and she sent me one of her clips. At first wala lang kasi yes she's funny but i didn't know searching her name sa TikTok will change my algorithm and showed me a lot of their kumu clips, next thing I know I was laughing to all of their clips , napapangiti na ko unti-unti nako nagiging okay, I was saved. I asked God for help—and He gave me 8 girls with chaotic friendship and real talent.
Did I get hurt and disappointed? YES masakit eh.
Will I cancel them? of course NO
Mali is mali yes. But as an adult ( ate ) my role is to guide them, help them be accountable, and grow. One mistake won’t define them. OT8 pa rin ako. We all fall short, but we all have the chance to be better. Experience is life’s best teacher.
#WaloHanggangDulo #BINI
Disappointed but never the type to throw below-the-belt words at the three. They made a mistake, yes. But Staku is still the girl who chants “Go Gwen,” Colet still shields her sisters like armor, & Jho is still the same girl who’d rather hurt than let her sisters feel the pain
aiah is so strong and brave that she didn’t even cared if she showed her vulnerability to many people, she just wants to let you all know what she is feeling. hay aiah, mahal na mahal kita 🥺 thank you for the courage. this one’s to all the bashers out there!
