Federal government-aligned forces backing South West State President Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur (Aden Madobe) have established new defensive positions inside residential compounds in Baidoa after withdrawing from several outer defensive lines, according to local sources, as tensions continue to rise in the regional capital.

Residents and local observers said government-aligned troops have abandoned a number of positions on the outskirts of the city in recent days and have instead dug defensive trenches and fortified positions within residential neighborhoods.

The repositioning comes as an armed faction calling itself the Free South West Forces, which is aligned with former South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed (Lafta Gareen), has significantly increased its military presence around the suburbs of Baidoa.

The group says its objective is to take control of the city, describing its campaign as an effort to “liberate Baidoa” from what it calls federal government forces deployed from Mogadishu to support the administration of Sheikh Aden Madobe.

The Federal Government backed Sheikh Aden Madobe’s installation as President of South West State earlier this year, a move that remains disputed by supporters of former regional leader Lafta Gareen and has deepened political divisions within the state.

Local sources also reported a growing number of defections from government-aligned forces, with some soldiers and commanders allegedly joining the Free South West Forces. The reported defections could further alter the military balance around Baidoa, although the exact number of personnel involved has not been independently verified.

The increased troop movements have heightened fears of renewed fighting inside Baidoa, where previous clashes caused civilian casualties, displacement, and damage to property. Residents say the establishment of defensive positions inside populated neighborhoods has raised concerns that any future confrontation could place civilians at greater risk.

Neither the Federal Government nor the administration of Sheikh Aden Madobe has publicly commented on the reported withdrawal from the city’s outskirts or the establishment of new defensive positions inside residential areas.

Similarly, the Free South West Forces have continued to issue statements reaffirming their intention to advance toward Baidoa, while accusing the Federal Government of interfering in South West State’s internal political affairs.

The security situation in and around Baidoa remains tense, with both sides maintaining military deployments as political and security tensions continue to escalate.

Amb Awes, I am hoping the discussions on Somalia's security agenda include fast-tracking the political settlements needed to enable genuine Somali ownership of security responsibilities, rather than simply replacing one external security actor (the AU) with another (Turkey).

Meanwhile, surprising that the outgoing ambassador is still playing a substantive role. From what I understand, his most recent conduct has only reinforced concerns that Turkey may not be the neutral and impartial mediator it says it is. These photo-ops, unfortunately, seem to reinforce that perception. I wonder if he knows that. Or is that the intention?
