It was a fun exercise recently to just open up a completely blank file and write an RL agent from scratch, without looking at any of my prior code. There is a point of scale where rewriting things from scratch is a bad idea, but it is a blessing when you can!

By “from scratch” I mean with pytorch, and I chuckle a bit about how I used to be irritated when people would say that, as I considered it not from scratch if it wasn’t in C with no libraries, but now I am them.

Farewell to one of the greatest pianists – Alfred Brendel has died aged 94.

The Czech-born pianist was one of the great musicians of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, renowned for his interpretations of the keyboard works of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Liszt and Beethoven. Brendel retired from the concert hall in 2008 and spent his final years teaching young musicians, as well as writing essays on music and making his own collections of poetry.

Update: Felix's farewell letter was just published. I read each and every word. Sharing here with my big audience because it may literally save lives. Turns out that stress in AI only contributed a bit. Overdose of ketamine (psychedelic drug) was what pushed him over the edge.

Our brain is a neural network of ~100T parameters. Do NOT try to finetune those weight matrices with casual use of drugs! Similar to "loss spikes" in LLM training, one wrong gradient step may take you to an alien mental land of overwhelming, 24/7 torture; and unlike LLMs, you cannot roll back to an earlier checkpoint. No experiments is worth the risk.

This is the least I can do to amplify Felix's last wish.

I cannot begin to fathom that in his excruciating pain, Felix mustered every ounce of his being to write down his stories, struggles, and hope that others might be spared from the same fate. Felix didn’t owe the world an apology — yet he gave one. He didn’t need to offer his gratitude — yet he did.

It is a testament to the depth of his kindness. Even in his final moment, he thought not only of his pain but of others, just like his research influenced a generation of scientists like myself.

For this, my answer is to be "unique". New ideas/thoughts/ways of thinking may be evaluated more than repeated works that we used to be trained on and proud of, since in the not-so-far future, they can be implemented once spoken out, much like what a magic spell looks like in fantasy stories.

Those with unique experience, unique skill set and unique positions can generalize beyond the domain that the current AI has been trained on, providing values for the entire mankind.

AI will eventually become the magic air that we breath everyday to empower ourselves to achieve something unimaginable in human history. 2/
