The perversity of the argument is using the history of urban renewal, which bulldozed apartments occupied by people of color, to block new apartments that could possibly house people of color in a mostly white, rich neighborhood.
For the past several decades in a row, we have moved into progressively larger, more expensive (even adjusting for inflation) homes that make us isolated, depressed, sedentary, and financially strained — suburbs could easily be studied as a public health problem
Suburbs (and more generally, living in too-large, spread-out homes) is extremely bad for humans in nearly every way — we did a video on the subject and I was blown away by how damaging it really is
@ryan_hassett I mean besides the I40 alignment it’s great project for a congested corridor and will connect 3 universities and 2 tier 1 research hospitals for a booming region...I just wish we could’ve started it 2 years ago and gone with the 15-501 route
On some level, we all understand how much better life is when people don't have to drive to work.
Overheard:
"We have a car, but I can walk from our new place to my office."
"Oh how WONDERFUL. That is just so nice."
Yes. It is. Now let's use public policy to make it standard.
"One reason the American dream has come apart is that too few cities have shared their resources—and real estate—between the rich and the rest." But progressive fiscal and land use policies make Minneapolis unique. https://t.co/YPt0KzAG8f
@CM_CharlieReece @ChrisChaten@CityofDurhamNC would love to talk to you about using property tax windfalls to expand sidewalk and bike trail construction, particularly in our marginalized and neglected communities
Oh fun it's been a while since I pointed out that the concept "single family" housing is part of a plot to define "family" along cishet WASP lines and eliminate household structures preferred by queer people and a variety ethnic minorities, send tweet.
We effectively tax new housing (which we don’t build very much of) to create affordable housing. Meanwhile, we protect financial returns on existing housing to the fullest extent possible, even making those protections inheritable. https://t.co/gSpeNe412o
