If this was Ronaldo’s last game for Portugal, he leaves having played most international games in history (233), scored most international goals (146), and become the only man to score in SIX different World Cups. Congrats, @cristiano - you’ve done your country & family so proud.
Morocco have reached back-to-back World Cup quarterfinals. No other African nation has ever done it. The rest of the continent has only reached the stage three times in total: Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010.
Here is the difference. Those three ran on golden generations. Once-in-a-lifetime crops of players who came, dazzled and aged out. As all players do.
Morocco built a system. Academies, infrastructure, a deliberate development programme. The thing with golden generations, as we are witnessing with Belgium, they end. But systems repeat.
Morocco are engineering the sort of sporting excellence that’d make them a bonafide football country for many years to come.
