People ask me how I feel on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion, when Russian bombs began to fall on peaceful cities and columns of Russian tanks marched on Kyiv. To be honest, nothing special. Just another day of war, which has become part of our lives. More precisely, it has destroyed everything we call normal life.

Perhaps when Russia bursts like a soap bubble and this war finally ends, this day will take on a special emotional significance for me. But not yet. To survive, you have to adapt to the “new normal.” Although everything we are going through is far from “normal.”  

Today, media outlets around the world are publishing my winter essay in different languages. In the text, I mention my friend, whom the war gave me and took away from me and everyone who loved Viktoria Amelina. I know that as long as we remember our dead, they are alive. Her unfinished book about women in war is being published this year in Denmark and the Netherlands. Even after her death, Vika continues to fight for us.

On February 24, 2022, I wrote on Facebook: "It will be difficult, but we will survive. History is against Putin." Four years have passed. We are on the right side of history. Putin is trying to take us back to the past. He cannot win on the battlefield, so his main weapon is terror against civilians. But the future will come. And it is inevitable.

Peak EU absurdity.

We are preparing to repair a pipeline Russia itself bombed - to restart the flow of Russian oil we claim to be phasing out - for Hungary, which is blocking €90bn for Ukraine that we’re funding - sans Hungary.

If this is not paid from frozen Russian assets - which it should be, morally and legally -, this move is beyond delusional. We’re subsidising the aggressor instead of making them pay for their own destruction.

That’s clinical-grade masochism - collaboration in our own economic suicide and Ukraine's strangulation.

Many of you may not know me well yet. But you can ask about me anywhere in the world, and you will hear the same thing: I have stood with the Ukrainian people from the very first day of this brutal Russian invasion.

Russia has caused immense suffering in my life and in the lives of many Syrians. Their forces killed my aunt, injured me and members of my family, destroyed my home, forced me into displacement, and shattered many of my dreams. They have also been responsible for the deaths and suffering of thousands of Syrians.

Today, the Ukrainian people face the same violence. Every day, Russian attacks target Ukrainian cities and civilians. Many of my Ukrainian friends know my position well, but I am writing this message for those who have only recently started following me.

Victory to Ukraine. Glory to the heroes and defenders.
