Bear 480, nicknamed Otis, is the oldest male bear to use the Brooks River. At 22 years old, he is missing one or two of his canine teeth, forcing him to use his back molars when eating more than younger bears would.

New Bear Update: Can you believe it? The queen is back. 410 was spotted last night in Brooks Camp. A brown bear in the wild averages 20 years of age. At 29 years she is Katmai's oldest known bear.

The first bear of the season, a light-colored subadult, was spotted near Brooks Camp by our maintenance crews preparing the camp for the summer. The bears are up and moving around!
