MC: I mean, there were so many genres you could have chosen back then to showcase your vocal skills. There were ballads and all kinds of other genres. So why did you choose trot as your debut song specifically Youngtak's song?
MJ: Ah actually trot was the first genre of music I was exposed to when I was young.
MC: Really?
MJ: When I was young I would go to karaoke with my mom and the rest of my family. My parents would always sing trot songs, so that was when I first discovered trot. I gradually fell in love with its charm, and I thought “Oh if I ever get the chance someday, I’d really like to properly challenge myself with trot.” Then, the opportunity came along and I was able to take on that challenge.
MC: Is there a trot song that you used to sing well when you were young?
MJ: When I was young, a song I really liked was Shabang Shabang.
MC: Ah Park Hyunbin’s Shabang Shabang!
MJ: yes yes yes. I liked songs like that too.
MC: Wait, I heard that you even sang Shabang Shabang as your practical audition song when you applied for the military band
MJ: That’s right.
MC: Oh but why? What was the reason?
MJ: I had a very specific strategy. I really wanted to join the military band so I had to audition. But obviously, there were going to be a lot of other people applying besides me.
MC: Right.
MJ: And I thought most people would probably prepare something like a ballad…
MC: Right
MJ: So what I thought was… the military band has a lot of events right?
MC: Yeah
MJ: And whenever they go to these events, there are a lot of older people in the audience…
MC: You have to get the crowd excited!
MJ: Exactly. So I thought “Oh if I audition with a trot song I might be able to get a better score…”
MC: Wow, that really was strategic!
MJ: Yes and that’s how I got selected!
MC: Oh wow~
