Urban Storm Water Flood Management Study of Kakinada smart city, Andhra Pradesh wins SKOCH-2026 Award.

This study is undertaken by the Deltaic Regional Cntre, National Institute of Hydrology, Kakinada for which funds are provided by the Ministry of Jal Shakti Govt., of India. This study was refered by KMC, KAKINADA. The project focused on developing scientific and sustainable solutions for urban stormwater drainage and flood management, contributing to enhanced urban resilience and water-resource planning.

The award-winning study was undertaken by the following team:
• Dr. Y. R. Satyaji Rao, Director, NIH, Roorkee as Mentor
• R. Venkata Ramana – Principal Investigator (PI)
• Dr. V. S. Jeyakanthan – Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)
• Dr. Y. Siva Prasad – Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI).

The work aligns with national efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure resilience and improve flood preparedness in rapidly growing cities. The Deltaic Regional Centre , National Institute of Hydrology has been actively engaged in stormwater flood management and urban hydrological studies in coastal and urban environments. This achievement reflects the dedication, scientific excellence, and collaborative efforts of the research team.

Kakinada Gateway Port is one of the four ports currently under construction in Andhra Pradesh and the only private port among them.

The breakwater works are almost complete, and dredging works are currently underway. Berth-1 is expected to be operational by December.
