In American hotels, tipping housekeeping is mandatory.
Forget to leave $5 on the nightstand every morning,
and you might get half-washed towels and a missing pillowcase.
In Kyoto, an American businessman stayed at a clean business hotel.
Every morning, he left a ¥1,000 banknote ($7) on the bedside table.
When he returned in the evening, the room was spotless.
Towels folded into crisp hospital corners.
Bed made like origami.
And sitting right in the center of the nightstand:
His ¥1,000 banknote.
Neatly flattened, placed under a small folded paper crane with a handwritten note in English:
"Dear guest: You left your money on the table. We have kept it safe for you."
The next morning, he left the money again with a note: "This is a gift for cleaning!"
That evening, the money was back on the table.
With a new note:
"Thank you for your kind words. Cleaning your room is our job. Please take your money."
In America, you pay people to do their jobs properly.
In Japan, people do their jobs with perfection because that is who they are.
