I’ve always been grateful whenever a new script reaches me. In fact, I want to thank them because they helped me so much. Whenever there was something in the story that I didn’t understand, our director and the screenwriter were always there to support me.

Every time I received a script, I tried to look at it from a human perspective. I never approached it as, “This woman is going to break up a marriage” or “She’s going to steal someone else’s husband.” Instead, I looked at it differently. I thought, “For this young woman to continue on her journey, she has to stay on her feet. She has to survive.” Just like Hürrem in Magnificent Century.

Host: Yes, just like Hürrem.

When you look at it from that angle with more humanity than emotion you stop seeing only the marriage or things like that. Instead, you think, “They’re going to kill me. I have to do something.” At that point, you truly don’t have the luxury of worrying about anyone else’s feelings. It’s simply a choice to survive. In fact, it’s the very first step toward life. It’s a decision you make.

Rather than saying, “This character is like this, she breaks people apart, she does this or that,” because if you perform her that way, of course people will see her as a bad person. But I did the exact opposite. I carefully worked out the rhythm of the character and constantly built her around one idea: How can this woman survive?

And I think that came across to the audience. As I said, you could easily portray her as the bad woman the one who destroys relationships, comes between people, steals someone else’s life, or whatever. But, as I said, you have to approach her with deep emotion. You have to truly live the character and feel what she feels.

I played her with the belief that she was fighting to win her own life.

Host: Was that already in the script, or was it your own interpretation?

Damla: The first time they explained it to me, I honestly didn’t understand, because no one had really explained it that way before. But after many conversations with our director and Ms. Gül, as we kept discussing the character and peeling back her layers, I finally said, “Yes, now I see her.” From that moment on, I completely bought into their vision, and from then on, I started building the character with that perspective in mind.
