After 11 years as a sports columnist at the Seattle Times, I have decided to resign. It was entirely my choice, and it was not an easy one. The impetus was the Times declining to run a column I wrote from the perspective of two female student athletes who were opposed to competing against biological males. It was one of several pieces of mine that had been spiked, and I no longer felt like I could properly do my job as a columnist. I lay out the situation in greater detail in the link below, but I want to say that I enjoyed my time with the paper, find the talent there to be immense, and have no animosity toward anyone who works there. It was just time for a change.

@liquid_mirror@TheDivisionGame We found that slowing down the kill, allowing the boss to do all her stuff, allowed us to complete the event successfully
This little girl, Emilia, goes to school with my son. At just 5 years old, she’s facing an unimaginable fight after being diagnosed with an aggressive, high-risk brain tumour (Medulloblastoma).
Only weeks ago, she was dancing, playing with her dolls, and enjoying family camping trips. Then, out of nowhere, she lost feeling in her leg and arm, and her speech changed. An MRI revealed a large, life-threatening tumour at the base of her brain. Surgeons acted quickly and removed it, but her battle has only just begun.
Emilia now faces weeks of proton beam radiotherapy, months of chemotherapy, and countless procedures. Her parents, Alex and Seb, are taking unpaid leave to care for her while still looking after their two boys, creating huge financial pressure.
If we can, please help this beautiful family, whether by donating or sharing their story so they can focus entirely on Emilia’s fight.

🖤 Diogo Jota - The Whistle's Blown Far Too Soon
Finding it hard to write these words, fingers trembling as I type. Diogo Jota is gone. Just days after marrying the love of his life, standing proudly in a church with his new wife Rute and their three young children, he and his brother Andre are lost in a road accident in Spain. A family torn apart, futures stolen in silence.
Jota was 28. A player in his prime, a Premier League champion, a Nations League winner, an #LFC forward who played the game with bite and purpose. But that’s not why this hurts so much. It’s because he carried himself with quiet dignity, a humility rare in modern football. He didn’t shout for attention, he earned respect by how he played, how he worked, how he made you believe.
He scored goals that lifted stadiums, but he never chased the spotlight. His joy seemed rooted not in fame, but in the chance to play, to contribute, to belong. And so we embraced him. Because we saw something of ourselves in him. Not the talent, not the trophies, but the effort, the heart, the sense of duty.
This morning we wake up in a world that makes less sense. A young father gone, a brother gone, a family grieving beyond words. And we grieve too, from afar. Because somehow, through the screen and the songs and the match days, they became part of our lives.
You never knew us, Diogo, but we knew you. And we will never forget. #YNWA #RIPJota #DiogoJota
