Devolution must mean restructuring government, not adding another layer. Yorkshire needs one elected regional body, not 4 mayors, clear responsibility and proper scrutiny — replacing duplication, not adding to it.

@IPPRNorth In Yorkshire's situation Keeping 4 mayors and their departments, adding an oversight committee, with Whitehalls central control and costs unchanged is not the answer. One Yorkshire government taking control of all the region, transfering jobs from Whitehall, is real devolution

Correct. A Yorkshire Parliament needn't mean more government. The waste is Whitehall, councils, four mayoral structures and public bodies all with their own administration. Proper devolution should replace fragmentation, moving powers from Whitehall, streamlining local government

The mayoral system will not do it well. We need a proper structure in Yorkshire with rules made in York, not Westminster London.
For the cost of 4 mayors, hundreds of civil servants and quangos, we can have our own regional parliament. #empowertheregions

London gets all the funding and advantages. Remove the distortion of London and the South East, the UK average GDP per capita drops dramatically to around £33,300, revealing that Scotland outperforms the rest of the UK. Meaningful devolution works.

Fiscal devolution must not mean power in one mayoral office. Yorkshire needs a proper regional democratic structure.
