Terminal, the doctor had said. Three months. Four at most.
He stood on his porch. The air was fresh, the red sky vibrant in the west. He felt good today. He hadn't needed his cane.
That had been five years, and with each sunset, the doctors were wrong by one more day.

"I'm not afraid of death," the prisoner said. The flames crept closer.
"The body isn't the only thing that burns," the wizard replied. "So too does the soul."
A brittle ash fell. The prisoner went slack.
"And it is not death you should fear, but eternal undeath..."

"I choose the left entrance," he said to the fae. Down he went, his insides twisting, until he arrived at the same meadow he had just left. "You said this would lead to my heart's desire!"
"Then your heart's desire is here," the fae said. "Even if you don't know it."

I wondered if she would give me a hug. Or at the very least, a smile, considering how far I'd come to see her.
But no, she only gave a grunt and said, "You're late."
So she was the same in every multiverse then.

I'd known her for only a day. But for her it would've been a lifetime.
"Don't go," I said.
"I have to." A brilliant portal opened behind her. "I have to go back to my own time."
"Will I see you again?"
"In fifty years, in this exact place." And then she was gone.

I tried again. "I promise, I'll do better next time."
I searched for a clue in her eyes. Ageless eyes of fathomless depths. Would she give another chance?
"It's too late," Mother Earth said. And the wildfires continued to burn, and the oceans continued to flood.

His therapist said he'd made good progress.
But the yearning never went away, no matter how much time passed. He'd only hidden it better. His therapist didn't know he'd bought a VR Link (tm).
He turned it on, again, and revisited the last memory of his late wife.

They called it the Night's Scar. Wander into the clearing, and it would come first for your sight, then your speech, then your very soul.
Yet she continued to pick rare herbs in that clearing without fear.
For it had been she who started the rumor.

"Heads," the soothsayer said. "Princess, you're not the chosen one."
"Perhaps. Or perhaps the coin is wrong."
"The signs speak true." He flipped again. The princess focused, and the coin hovered midair, neither heads nor tails.
"Or perhaps we choose our own signs."

It wasn't the plan, for her love to leave first. But she's ready now, ready to follow him.
A push of the keyboard, and she becomes bits and bytes. She transfers in, and she's 20 again, and it's just as she remembered. And she smiles as they meet for the first time.

Saw some comic con photos with those fan and celeb meetup photo ops and there was a plastic divider between them. Just imagine, a hundred years from now history books are going to use these as primary sources for pandemic life.
@whistberry @elibisme Yes. But unclear how much trad publishers will buy those, might need to go more small press. Biased but my opinion is the “change” character arc isn’t as heavily emphasized in non western fiction eg anime etc
The myths tell of a catastrophe - an impact that cleaved reality into two: a world of dreams and a world of shadow. Origins buried over the eons, now told as children's tales.
But one scientist found a way through the weft. And soon the world will return to darkness.
