Senator Ted Cruz’s Dangerous Fantasy: Exploiting Somalia, Ignoring Atrocities, and Weaponizing Fear for Political Gain
The latest statement by Senator Ted Cruz calling for U.S. recognition of the secessionist administration in Hargeisa exposes how Somalia continues to be exploited by certain American politicians for geopolitical theater, donor appeasement, and fear-based political fundraising. Instead of addressing the growing frustrations facing Texans at home, Senator Cruz once again resorts to weaponizing Iran, China, terrorism, and foreign conflicts to energize lobbying networks and maintain political relevance ahead of future elections. Somalia and the Horn of Africa have now become another stage for manufactured political drama designed to satisfy ideological financiers and media attention.
What makes this position deeply disturbing is the deliberate attempt to glorify a one-tribe secessionist administration while ignoring the suffering and atrocities committed in SSC-Khaatumo regions and against communities in Awdal. During the Las Anod conflict, civilians were displaced, homes were destroyed, journalists were intimidated, and innocent people lost their lives. Yet these realities are conveniently ignored because the administration in Hargeisa has repackaged itself as a useful geopolitical tool for anti-Iran and anti-China narratives. Politicians who constantly preach democracy and human rights suddenly abandon those principles when political interests and lobbying agendas take priority.
The claim that the Hargeisa administration represents a major strategic threat to Iran or the Houthis is detached from reality and insults serious geopolitical analysis. The same administration being promoted as a future anti-Iran military fortress could not even maintain control during the SSC-Khaatumo conflict despite military escalation and civilian displacement. The obsession with “recognition at any cost” is not a unified aspiration shared by all northern Somali communities, but largely a political project driven by a narrow elite that has spent decades marketing itself to foreign powers through lobbying, propaganda, and shifting geopolitical slogans.
Somalia is not a colony or geopolitical playground for foreign politicians, media personalities, or lobbying networks. Somali territory, ports, coastlines, and airspace cannot legally be transformed into foreign military assets by an unrecognized enclave acting outside the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia. International law, the United Nations, the African Union, and the broader international community continue to recognize Somalia’s territorial integrity. No amount of propaganda, donor money, or political theater can erase that legal reality.
The Somali people - both in Somalia and across the diaspora in the United States -deserve dignity and fairness, not fearmongering and collective smears. Somali-Americans are among the hardest-working and most entrepreneurial immigrant communities in America, contributing through transportation, healthcare, logistics, retail, engineering, education, and countless businesses that create jobs and strengthen local economies. They should not be used as political props by opportunistic politicians seeking campaign donations and media relevance through manufactured geopolitical hysteria.
