毎年欠かさず電話してきてたのに、去年は来なかった。

こっちから電話した。

「お母さん、今日何の日かわかる。」

「わからない。」

「私の誕生日だよ。」

電話を切った後、泣いた。

翌年も電話が来なかった。

また電話した。

「お母さん、今日何の日かわかる。」

「わからない。」

また泣いた。

それから毎年、こっちから電話するようになった。

今年も電話した。

「お母さん、今日何の日かわかる。」

少し間があった。

「あなたが生まれた日でしょ。」

固まった。

「覚えてたの。」

「忘れるわけないじゃない。」

「去年は忘れてたよ。」

「そうだったかしら。」

また忘れてた。

でも今日だけは、覚えてたらしかった。

「なんで今日だけ覚えてたの。」

お母さんが少し間を置いた。

「今日だけは絶対に忘れたくなかったから。」

認知症でも、忘れたくないことは忘れないらしい。

娘が生まれた日だけは、どこかに残ってたのかもしれない。

来年また忘れるかもしれない。

でももういい。

今日だけ覚えてくれたことが、3年分より嬉しかったから。​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

嬉しくて嬉しくて突然母に会いたくなった。

翌日、実家に帰った。

お母さんが出てきて開けてくれた。
