New York Magazine has responded to the criticism of its controversial Habibi City issue. Read their statement carefully, because it does the thing it's apologizing for.

They say the issue captured "tensions and live debates that exist within these communities, including how they relate to Israel." They acknowledge "critiques from some in the Jewish community."

Notice the grammar: "These communities", and, separately, "the Jewish community."

Nearly a million Jews expelled from Baghdad, Tunis, Sana'a, and Tehran, and even in the correction, we are filed outside the region. The statement re-performs the erasure it was written to address.

And "some." Not the substance of a single criticism, not the expulsions the issue never mentioned, not the verdict it printed that no court has reached, not the October 7th massacre they've glanced upon. Just "some in the Jewish community," and an invitation to dialogue that answers nothing.

The dialogue was available before publication. It's called an editor.
