When I moved to the UK 🇬🇧 some years back, I thought my biggest advantage was my work ethic.
Turns out… it wasn’t enough.
Not because I wasn’t skilled. Not because I wasn’t qualified. But because I was playing by rules that worked back home, in a completely different system.
UK corporate has its own language. It’s own politics. Its own unspoken expectations. And no one hands you the manual.
I had to unlearn:
• Waiting to be noticed
• Staying silent in meetings
• Thinking hard work guarantees promotion
• Avoiding self-advocacy
• Oversharing with colleagues too quickly

Finding a committed, sensible partner who understands money isn’t just romantic. In this country, it’s genuinely strategic. Single people, please choose wisely! This is not an advice, it’s a warning.
Well. The message shouldn’t be to desist from AI but to desist from using AI amateurishly, lazily, and unimaginatively.
Instead of copy and pasting AI’s responses, a research student can use AI creatively by:
1. Having it challenge you: Tell AI your main idea and ask it to argue against you. Read through to see if it makes sense.
2. Use it to think out loud: See AI like a friend who listens. Explain your idea, let it reflect it back, then refine what you meant.
3. Use it to get ideas: Use AI to generate a rough outline, then rewrite it in your own words and thinking. Make it truly yours.
4. Use it to find areas you missed: Feed AI your research and ask it to spot gaps you missed.
I will say it again and again that the best use of artificial intelligence is in combining it with natural intelligence.

At several points in your career, you’ll be one of the last people left in your role, out of those who joined at the same time. Unless you’re on a trajectory to leadership, you should consider moving immediately
If you’re new in the UK and have enough savings to keep you going for a few months, invest a small part of your time — just 2 hrs a week — volunteering with the NHS. Do it consistently for 6 months, and you’ll walk away with something money can’t buy: a solid UK reference and verified UK work experience. That simple step can open doors when you start applying for paid roles.
