After many months of negotiations, young Petr Čech joined Chelsea in 2004 after an impressive spell with Rennes in France.
The 21-year-old Czech goalkeeper arrived in the Premier League knowing he would start behind in the goalkeeper pecking order, as Claudio Ranieri, then Chelsea’s manager, had Carlo Cudicini as his undisputed starter and a fan favorite.

Ranieri was sacked shortly before Čech’s arrival, and José Mourinho took over as manager. Everyone had to start from scratch. After an outstanding performance in the Under-21 European Championship, Čech shone during the club’s preseason in the United States—something Mourinho, always with an expert eye for spotting talent, did not overlook.

‼️ It is far from clear whether or not Chavarria will be a regular starter for Chelsea, as Cucurella was. But even if he is not, his arrival does indicate a willingness from BlueCo to move away from making endless multi-million-pound bets on potential and target a good, seasoned player at a reasonable price who fits what their manager wants to do.
