Excerpt from A Call That Changed a Life

The phone rang just after midnight.

George almost didn’t answer. He was half-drunk, half-asleep, and fully convinced nothing good ever came with a call at that hour. But something in the silence of the house — in the storm that rattled the windows — made him pick it up anyway.

The sheriff’s voice on the other end split him open. His parents. The crash. Gone.

The world tilted. The bottle on the nightstand glared at him like an old friend and a fresh enemy. His first instinct was the same as always — drown it, drink until the storm passed. But as he stood there in the dark, phone still warm in his hand, George knew this wasn’t a storm you could outdrink. This was one you had to survive, minute by minute, breath by breath.

It was the call that broke him.
It was also the call that would change him.
