Spain no longer rules a global empire.
Church attendance has fallen.
It is far more secular than it was a century ago.
So why does every Pope still pay attention to Spain? ๐ช๐ธโ๏ธ
The answer lies in history.
For centuries, Spain was one of the Catholic Church's most important allies. After the end of Muslim rule in Granada in 1492--the last Muslim state on the Iberian Peninsula--Spanish rulers saw themselves as defenders of the faith and forged a close relationship with Rome.
As the Spanish Empire expanded across the Americas, Africa, and Asia, Catholicism expanded with it. Missionaries, churches, schools, and religious orders followed Spanish ships, helping transform a European religion into a truly global one.
Spain also became a key pillar of Catholic resistance during the Protestant Reformation. While much of northern Europe broke with Rome, Spain remained firmly committed to the Church and devoted enormous resources to defending its position.
Its influence went beyond politics and empire.
Spanish saints, theologians, and missionaries helped shape Catholic thought for generations. Their legacy can still be found in Catholic communities across the world today.
Then Spain changed.
Political upheaval, civil war, modernization, and social change gradually transformed the country. Religious observance declined, and Spain became far more secular than the nation that once considered itself Catholicism's foremost champion.
Yet Spain never lost its importance to the Vatican.
It remains a bridge to the Spanish-speaking world, home to some of Christianity's most important religious traditions, and a country whose historical influence can still be seen wherever Catholicism spread under Spanish rule.
That is why Popes continue to pay attention to Spain.
Not because of its military power or political influence.
But because few countries did more to help shape the Catholic world as we know it today.
If the end of Muslim rule in Spain had never happened, would the history of Catholicism--and the world--have unfolded differently? ๐ช๐ธ๐
