127.0.0.1 and localhost often point to the same machine, but they're not the same thing.

127.0.0.1 is the IPv4 loopback IP address. It's a fixed address reserved for your own computer and bypasses DNS resolution.

localhost is a hostname. Your operating system resolves it through the hosts file or DNS, and it can map to 127.0.0.1 (IPv4) or ::1 (IPv6) depending on your system configuration.

This distinction matters because some applications bind only to IPv4 or only to IPv6. In those cases, localhost may behave differently from 127.0.0.1, which is why developers sometimes see connection issues even though both seem to refer to "the same computer."
