"Don't be afraid of Covid." Are you kidding me? After 210,000 deaths in the U.S. & 1 million deaths worldwide? This either shows a breathtakingly callous, inhumane & counterproductive attitude, or he has altered mental status – in which case the 25th Amendment should be invoked.
1/Stein's '72 characterization of the Gaussian is beautiful. Take a scalar random variable x with mean=m and variance = s^2. Consider class of f(x) w/ E[f'(x)]< ∞. Then x is Gaussian *if and only if* for all such f we have the identity below. Wild that it needs just expectation!
I encourage all eligible applicants to apply! IACS is a fantastic institute. The fellowships provide good compensation, great benefits, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations!
Exciting fellowship opportunities at the Institute for Advanced Computational Sciences (@IACSComputes) at Stony Brook University:

“The Banach–Tarski paradox is a theorem which shows a ball can be split into a finite number of pieces and put back together in a different way to yield two identical copies of the original ball.”
Go home math you’re drunk.
Wow. I have to say that https://t.co/Al8Wi2qmc5 has got to be the most iconic way to hold a virtual poster session. I will be presenting some preliminary work today at the Joint Affinity Group poster session - Find me at poster 1.40 #ICML2020
"THE EMPIRICAL DUALITY GAP OF CONSTRAINED STATISTICAL LEARNING"
Paper: https://t.co/9994KLHdBT
Presentation: https://t.co/xxGlbzJd2e
The authors introduce a framework for constrained statistical learning. An interesting paper and a very well executed presentation.
I had a great time attending #ICASSP2020 virtually. Kudos to the organizers on putting this together! Here are some talks that I really enjoyed:
"LOOKAHEAD CONVERGES TO STATIONARY POINTS OF SMOOTH NON-CONVEX FUNCTIONS"
Paper: https://t.co/ev6cBgO90F
"BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY: RISK-AWARE NONLINEAR BAYESIAN ESTIMATION"
Paper: https://t.co/3bwYpm6H5i
Presentation: https://t.co/1xYTRWQfD4
A very nice paper that highlights the disadvantage of using MMSE estimators and derives an alternative that is more robust.
