Yesterday morning, I was sat with partners from across the development and humanitarian community to discuss Somalia’s needs, what is changing, and how Somali institutions can work well with international partners.

For @Hormuud Salaam Foundation, this conversation matters deeply.

Our foundation was created because the needs around us were urgent. When hospitals needed oxygen, we built local oxygen capacity. When Mogadishu needed faster emergency response, we created a fire service. When children with disabilities needed a route into education, we helped create one. And when young people needed a first step into work, we backed training that led to real jobs.

Those experiences have taught us something important.

Local organisations can often see the problem early, move quickly and stay close to the people affected. That local knowledge matters. So does the ability to act when communities cannot wait.

Somalia still faces enormous humanitarian pressure. We should never minimise that. But Somalia is also changing. Communities are connected. Private sector systems are working. Local institutions have reach, insight and trust.

The question is how international partners build with that capability, not around it.
