Condoms significantly reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but they do not provide 100% protection, especially against infections spread through skin-to-skin contact such as the following;
1. Human Papillomavirus (HPV):
HPV spreads through skin contact in the genital area. Condoms reduce risk but do not fully protect because uncovered skin can transmit the virus.
2. Genital Herpes (HSV-1 & HSV-2):
Herpes spreads through contact with infected skin or sores, including areas not covered by a condom.
3. Syphilis:
This is Caused by Treponema pallidum, syphilis spreads through direct contact with a sore (chancre), which may occur outside the condom-covered area.
4. Hepatitis B:
Primarily spread through body fluids, but can also transmit through contact with infected blood via microscopic skin breaks. Condoms greatly reduce risk but do not eliminate it entirely.
5. Pubic Lice (Crabs):
These parasites live in pubic hair and spread through close physical contact. Condoms do not prevent this.
6. Scabies:
Caused by skin mites transmitted through prolonged skin contact.
7. Molluscum Contagiosum:
A viral skin infection spread by close skin-to-skin contact, including sexual contact.
8. Chancroid:
Caused by Haemophilus ducreyi. It spreads through direct contact with painful genital ulcers, which may be located outside the condom-covered area.
9. Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV):
A more invasive form of chlamydia caused by certain strains of Chlamydia trachomatis. It can spread through contact with genital lesions or infected skin.
10. Granuloma Inguinale (Donovanosis):
Caused by Klebsiella granulomatis. It spreads through contact with open genital sores.
