I am also a Japanese citizen, and like you, I also very strongly want to preserve the beautiful Japan for future generations. However, I believe that rather than simply looking at the past, we must also shape our country for the future. I say this because our Japan was not as beautiful as you and many others like to think.

I believe from your question that you are much younger than I am. I remember a Japan that had horrible pollution, where we had to wear masks just to go outside. It was a terrible time. However, I believe that you are talking more from the standpoint of social issues, so I will concentrate on those.

Japan years back was not this wonderful paradise that many young people like to think it was. For many people, it was hard living. This was not only because our country had to rebuild after the war, but also because of society at that time. There were no gay rights, no women’s rights, no minority rights, and the path for people to take was, for nearly everyone, very limited.

For example, years back DV was not illegal, as long as a weapon was not used. That means that a husband could kick his wife in the mouth or beat her up totally and the police would not get involved because it was a “family matter”. Same for children. Unless severe bodily harm was incurred, beating people up in the home was totally legal.

To make matters worse, it was very hard for people, especially women, to find a job past the age of 30, other than very low paying jobs. So even if she were to leave her husband there was no place where she could go. It was indeed a very difficult time for many people.

So for women, they had to hurry to get married by 30, even if it were to men they did not like, only to survive. Of course, this resulted in unhappy marriages and few if any children.

As for company employees, most worked like slaves. Working six days a week was common. When I started working (at a very large financial company) we worked Saturdays as well. So weekends were very short and mostly just for shopping and sleeping. It was a very difficult time, I can assure you, and far from the “golden happy days” that are portrayed in many movies and dramas.

This is the problem today – that many young people mistakenly think that becoming conservative will bring Japan back to a “golden age”, but this golden age never existed. It was a very difficult time for Japan and Japanese.

Of course, I do not believe that the liberals are any better. They call for unbridled immigration, and little or no military to protect our country.

The truth is we need selective immigration of those who will assimilate and become Japanese, as well as protect our country with a strong military-industrial complex. We also need to make sure that we are inclusive of our minorities and not allow them to be stigmatized or limited due to their background, gender or sexual orientation.

That is why I say that extreme leftists as well as rightists are the “lunatic fringe”. They both believe in ideals that are very difficult to bring about.

So, to answer your question, I totally agree with you that protecting our culture is important. However, that does not mean we should strive to go back to an era that was ghastly for most of our people, while pretending that the images portrayed by either right- or left-wing political groups are correct. They are not.
