Walmart committed $520 million to robots in 2026. BMW runs humanoids at $0.40/hour. The $20 minimum wage campaign just made both decisions easier.

The workers fighting for higher wages are accidentally funding the business case for replacing themselves.

Here's the part that should make everyone uncomfortable:

Every time a state raises its minimum wage, it doesn't protect workers - it shortens the payback period on replacing them. A 2026 NBER study confirmed this directly. Minimum wage increases are statistically accelerating industrial robot adoption. Not causing it. Accelerating it.

The current math: a $30,000 humanoid robot replaces a $15/hour warehouse worker in under 18 months. After that, operating cost drops to $0.40/hour. Walmart understood this and committed $520 million to AI robotics in 2026. Two-thirds of its stores will be fully automated by year end.

This isn't happening in a press release. It's happening in distribution centers nobody visits, one deployment at a time. By the time it's a headline, the jobs are already gone.

The uncomfortable question politicians on both sides refuse to answer: if automation was always inevitable, was the minimum wage debate ever actually about workers - or just about the timeline?
