Scientists are now seriously discussing spraying particles over the Pacific to squash a super El Niño.

The idea is called marine cloud brightening. By spraying tiny sea salt particles into low-lying clouds over the Pacific, researchers hope to make the clouds more reflective, bounce more sunlight back into space, and cool the ocean enough to weaken a developing super El Niño.

Computer simulations suggest it could reduce El Niño’s intensity by around 40%.

But there’s a problem.

Nobody knows what the long-term consequences would be.

Other research suggests that brightening the wrong part of the Pacific could disrupt much of the natural El Niño–La Niña cycle, a climate system that influences rainfall, droughts, agriculture, and weather patterns across the globe.

That’s why scientists are not proposing real-world deployment. The risks of unintended consequences are still too great.

The fact that we’re seriously discussing engineering the planet’s weather is a reminder of how far we’ve pushed the climate system.
