@evikokalari According to your flawed argument, all Albanians today who speak and write in Greek are Greeks, right? Second-generation Albanian kids mostly speak Greek. Does that make them Greek? No. Language alone has never determined nationality.
Surprisingly, this isn't the first time in the history of the Western world that an alliance is being turned into an empire, and allies into subjects.
When Persia managed to conquer the Greek Ionian settlements on the Anatolian coast, they started rebelling over higher taxes. They managed to free themselves — and allied with Athens, the most powerful sea power in Greece at the time, to protect them. Together, they managed to repel the punishing mission sent by the Persians, with the battle of Marathon being one of the most crucial events in the history of Western civilisation.
Soon after, the alliance between the Ionian city states and Athens was formalised into the "Delian" league.
Now here is the crucial part that should remind all of us of current events: The members of the Delian league had a choice. Either they pay a tax to the alliance or they contribute with ships and soldiers. Most opted for the former. It was simply more efficient for Athens to centrally control most of the armed forces. Similar to how Europe willingly disarmed itself after the cold war and left the United States with the task of ensuring security, so did the members of the Delian league.
The consequences were disastrous.
Without armies, they had no way to disobey Athens. Soon after, the treasury was moved from Delos to Athens for "security reasons". It then became impossible to leave the alliance under threat of violence. Even if a state was unable to pay the agreed-upon tax, Athenian soldiers would descend upon the island and punish it.
"The strong do what they can, the weak suffer what they must." was the Athenian motto.
Athenian hegemony in Greece was feared. Despite being a democracy, it was the most feared and brutal state in the Greek world. More and more states started to align themselves with Sparta, which, albeit brutally oppressing its own slave class of the helots, stood up for the rights of individual Greek states.
The Peleponnesian War was the result. Hubris eventually caused Athens to brutally lose this war which devastated Greece—the hitherto greatest civilisation the world has seen up to that point, Athens, the inventor of theatre, the codifier of Homer, the home of mathematics, was devastated. An empire built on fear and violence couldn't last against an alliance of free states.
The parallels are clear. Similar to how NATO was born to defend the West from the Soviet threat, so was the Delian league created to defend against Persia. The USA is now taking the next step: Turning the Western alliance from the Delian League into an American Empire. The parallels between the threats to Denmark over Greenland and the Athenian devastation of Melos are flippant.
Unfortunately, Americans have discovered their own hubris, in the form of perhaps the most narcissistic leader the world has ever seen. It is destroying an alliance that was meant to protect Europe from Russia right when the alliance was needed the most. The West has never been weaker.
But there is hope—the best of Greece was yet to come. Socrates and Plato created Western philosophy under the backdrop of a devastated Athens and changed human history in ways we will never fully be able to appreciate. Their student, Aristotle, was the teacher of Alexander the Great. Greece left its warring states period, states that hated each other, ended up uniting and the rest is history.
We can repeat this history. Europe must unite.
