I will never stop being mad at people who try to use Heartstopper as a wholesome comparison to put BL down because a big part of the show’s appeal is that it borrows a LOT of tropes from the genre. Like YOU LOOK STUPID SHUT UP.
Call me petty but I don’t think I’ll ever get over Heartstopper’s author walking all over BL mangaka, criticizing them for their works while simultaneously stealing tropes from Asian queer media (including the BL manga she ‘detests’). Still remains a mad event to me.
What gets me about the Alice Oseman comments was that literally all she had to say was, “I’m not drawing NSFW in heartstopper because the leads are minors,” but instead she went out of her way to punch down at Asian BL
Common themes of Eng. Anti-BL critics:
+No knowledge of Queer Asian history & terms
+Largely consume Eng. LGBTQ+ media directed at a teen audience
+Don't seek out comparable Eng. media to critique ( 🔞BL vs 🔞Eng)
+Ignore all content & themes in masc. gay men's media
+Blame women
It warms my cockles to see most responses to this tweet being #Heartstopper, mostly because of the way that the series borrowed (appropriated?) #BL tropes and then had fans (and an author🙃) claiming that the series had "better rep" than East/SE Asian queer media
