Michael Jackson’s catalog is having a massive resurgence in 2026, driven by the biopic ‘Michael,’ starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson and directed by Antoine Fuqua. The film has crossed $1 billion worldwide, becoming the first biographical film ever to reach that mark, and now stands as the highest-grossing biopic of all time, surpassing both ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’
The chart impact has been just as significant. “Billie Jean” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 in May, over 40 years after its release, marking the longest climb to the top of that chart and making Jackson the first artist who died before the chart’s creation to reach No. 1 on it. The song also topped the Global Spotify chart that month, and Jackson topped the Billboard Artist 100 for the first time, one of the few posthumous acts to ever do so.
Streaming numbers have followed the same trajectory. Jackson briefly became Spotify’s top global artist in mid-May and surged past 100 million monthly listeners. His catalog has also posted major chart longevity, with ‘Thriller’ logging 10 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.
None of this reflects new music or new honors, every milestone is posthumous and tied directly to the biopic reigniting interest in his existing catalog. Still, it’s one of the biggest catalog revivals pop music has seen in years.
