Malaysia needs more EV chargers, but imposing a levy on EVs, as proposed by MITI Minister DS Johari Abdul Ghani, may end up making the problem worse. In my piece for @theedgemalaysia today, I explain why the proposal misdiagnoses the problem.
The RM3.3 billion cited by JAG in forgone tax revenue mainly came from tax exemptions to encourage EV purchases and develop Malaysia’s EV industry. It should not be confused with the separate incentives given to Charge Point Operators (CPOs).
More importantly, taxing EVs could weaken demand of EVs. Fewer EVs on the road means fewer customers for charging stations, making it harder for CPOs to recover their investment and expand the charging network.
A dedicated charging fund could help, especially in rural areas. But EV buyers should not be penalised to finance it when they are already helping to reduce the government’s RON95 subsidy burden and support the energy transition.
Taxing EV adoption to fund EV charging infrastructure simply makes no economic sense!

The biggest mass funeral in Gaza was held this week for 112 people (including 44 children) that were killed in an Israeli strike on a residential block in 2023.
Their bodies were only recently recovered from the rubble in an operation that spanned across two weeks.
A coalition of 30 civil society groups have urged AG Dusuki Mokhtar to explain why businessman Nicky Liow was granted a DNA in his RM36 million money laundering case.
They questioned why the AGC accepted Liow’s representation, what considerations led to the decision, and whether the 26 charges could be reinstated.

Fossil trying to help his cronies.
Private sector is already building the charging network, not government. You as the government need to make sure approvals are prompt and realistic. Go see how many CPOs waiting for infra and approvals.

@HannZiq Lmao, macam yang kritik ni bukan rakyat yang terpalit sekali akibat kebodohan PH.
PH abaikan reformasi atas alasan stabiliti kononnya, tapi sebenarnya membelakangi terus idea progresif yang menangkan dia dulu. Sekarang nak claim progresif gaduh sesama sendiri?
Hahahaha. Gtfo.
This is how capitalists will address climate change. Instead of placing the slightest restrictions on billionaires, the ruling class will propose murdering half the world’s population.
Today, I saw a Palestinian child picking up the brain of another Palestinian child.
Yes the actual brain.
He used a small rag to pick it up.
I also saw an infant ejected from his mother’s womb, due to the sheer power of the explosives Israel used in Gaza last night.
But the most inhumane thing was witnessing someone open up a baby’s soft pink onesie - only to discover pieces of bones and diaper inside.
Israel evaporated her little body with chemical weapons that are internationally banned.
