This ancient shark is actually older than the United States of America itself.

In 2016, researchers used radiocarbon dating to estimate the ages of 28 Greenland sharks in the North Atlantic. By analyzing the levels of carbon-14 in the sharks' eye lenses, which are formed before birth and do not regenerate, the researchers were able to estimate when the sharks were born.

One female shark was estimated to be around 400 years old, making it the longest-lived vertebrate known to science. Other sharks in the study were estimated to be between 272 and 393 years old. These estimates suggest that Greenland sharks have a much slower growth rate and longer lifespan than previously thought.
