Our 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Is a Smooth Operator:
Leaf springs and pickup trucks go together like horses and carriages. The same type of suspension that buoyed horse-powered buggies for centuries still lives under the bed of most modern trucks. A live rear axle with leaf springs might be the go-to configuration for handling heavy loads, but unladen, it's responsible for the jittery ride that plagues pickups equipped with that setup. Our long-term Toyota Tundra does not suffer that trade-off since it features a more sophisticated rear suspension.
When the third-generation Tundra debuted for 2022, it swapped the antiquated rear leaf springs for more modern coil springs. The transition to a five-link design has notably improved its ride quality, especially on models like our hybrid Limited CrewMax 4x4, which is fitted with the optional load-leveling rear air springs. The $650 upgrade lets users lower the truck's tail (making it easier to load cargo or hook up a trailer) or raise the rear end for a better departure angle while off-roading.
Through 20,000 miles, the logbook has myriad mentions of how nicely the truck goes down the road, even drawing a comparison to the much-lauded Ram 1500. "The Tundra was a comfortable ride for our weeklong vacation. It's pleasant to drive, plenty powerful, and rides smoothly—as well as a Ram, in my opinion," wrote Buyer's Guide director Rich Ceppos.
